OUR MISSION: Bring Back The Bays!
Over
just the past 50 years, our local estuaries--the lovely bays between
Long Island's million-dollar south shore homes and our beautiful
white sand barrier beaches--have been under attack. The world-renowned
fishing, clamming and maritime industry that once flourished in this
area have been decimated. And we humans are to blame...
DID YOU KNOW that each day more than 65 million gallons of
sewage is dumped on Long Island shores, beaches and bays? We're
fighting to stop this!
DID YOU KNOW that street storm drains, and the oil, litter
and waste they carry, empty unfiltered into our waterways? We're
fighting to stop this! (more)
DID YOU KNOW that pollutants and chemicals are building up in
our bays, killing plants and bottom-dwelling marine life? We're
fighting to stop this!
DID YOU KNOW that water temperatures and pH levels are so
high, and oxygen levels so low, some bays will no longer support
marine life? We're fighting to stop this!
DID YOU KNOW that since 1990, Operation SPLASH volunteers
have rescued more than 325 TONS of garbage from our shores? That's
325 TONS of plastic bags, plastic bottles and bottle caps, juice
boxes, styrofoam cups and food containers, BBQ grills, hot water
heaters, flat screen TVs, engine blocks, coconuts and more!
We're Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. (Stop Polluting, Littering And Save
Harbors), a non-profit, all-volunteer organization of more than
1,000 members committed to improving the quality of life along our
Long Island shores. We live here. We grew up here. We know how
beautiful and rich this area once was. And we have seen nature
starting to make a comeback. But we need your help. We urge you to
become educated in what is happening right here in your own back
yard. Join us
and support us in our mission to Bring Back the Bays!
