The largest donut franchise sells 30 cups of coffee
every second. Is it any wonder that styrofoam is the #1
litter substance found on our shores, bays and beaches?
Street
litter such as cups and styrofoam shipping peanuts get
washed into storm drains that empty directly into our
waters. And since styrofoam will never decompose, it is
likely to be a floating eyesore and a threat to marine
life, wild life, and birds for generations to come. Help
make a difference...join
Operation SPLASH today!
We’re a grass-roots organization dedicated to improving
the quality of life along our shores. Join Now and Receive
a FREE Re-usable Travel Mug to help reduce the amount of
styrofoam littering Long Island waters.

The S.T.O.P. (Stop
Throwing Out Pollutants) Program is designed to provide
area residents with a safe, environmentally sound method
of disposal of the many hazardous materials found in the
average home. By bringing such toxins as antifreeze, drain
cleaners and pesticides on any of the scheduled S.T.O.P.
collection days, you and your family can make a
significant contribution to the protection of our precious
groundwater supply and the preservation of our bays and
estuaries. Please join with us in cleaning our homes of
hazardous material and ensuring their proper collection
and disposal. Together we can ensure the continued
integrity of our fragile ecosystem.
When bringing items,
please follow these simple guidelines: Wrap leaking
containers in newspaper and place in a plastic bag or
larger container. Make sure all caps and lids are tight.
Place items securely in a box for transportation. Use
newspaper or cardboard to keep items from tipping or
hitting each other. Place chemicals which may react with
each other in separate areas of the vehicle. Do not leave
products in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended
period of time. Do not smoke near chemical products. Wear
rubber gloves when handling containers.

In honor of Earth Day, here are 25 ideas how you can
give back to Mother Earth!!
And remember every ONE person can make a difference!
1. Lower your
thermostat. Buy a programmable thermostat.
2. Reuse everything at least once, especially plastics.
3. Check out your bathroom. Use low-flow faucets,
showerheads, and toilets.
4. Start a compost in your back yard or on your rooftop.
5. Buy foods locally. Check out Eat Local Challenge and
Food Routes to get started. Buy locally made products and
locally produced services.
6. Buy in season.
7. Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs. You'll find more
on energy-efficient products and practices at Energy Star.
8. Turn off lights and electronics when you leave the
room. Unplug your cell phone charger from the wall when
not using it. Turn off energy strips and surge protectors
when not in use (especially overnight).
9. Recycle your newspapers.
10. Car pool. Connect with other commuters at
eRideShare.
11. Consider a car sharing service like Zipcar.
12. Ride a bike.
13. Walk, jog, or run.
14. Go to your local library instead of buying new books.
15. At holidays and birthdays, give your family and
friends the gift of saving the earth. Donate to their
favorite environmental group, foundation, or organization.
16. Get off junk mail lists. Green Dimes can get you
started. They’ll even plant a tree for you!
17. Buy products that use recyclable materials whenever
possible.
18. If you use plastic grocery bags, recycle them for
doggie poop bags or for small trashcan liners.
19. Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Given a
choice between plastic and paper, opt for paper.
20. Buy locally. Find farmers’ markets, family farms, and
other sources of sustainable grown food near you at Local
Harvest.
21. Consider organic cleaning products like vinegar,
borax, and baking soda.
22. If you have a baby, consider using cloth diapers. To
sign up for a diaper service to do the dirty work, check
out the National Association of Diaper Services.
23. Consider buying a fuel-efficient car or a hybrid.
24. Landscape with native plants.
Check out the article on the EPA website.
25. Opt into a clean energy program. Check out the
Green Power Network at the US Department of Energy.

After communicating with the Town of Hempstead for many months
about having decals made for our storm drains (dumping here pollutes our bays)
the Town has given the go ahead for 5,000 decals! WAY TO GO!!!

Is
there any other body of water of this small size anywhere
in the USA with
as many sewage plants pouring effluent into it?

OPERATION
SPLASH is an all volunteer non-profit organization
dedicated to providing a solution to the problem of
waterfront pollution through public awareness and a
"hands-on" cleanup program by land and sea.
OPERATION SPLASH is Freeport's grass-roots solution to
coastal pollution. In this friendly forum, we discuss our
concerns about Earth, the power we have as individuals to
change things and what actions we can take here and now.
By getting together and getting involved, we spread our
energy to others we make a difference.
Won't you join us:
- Encourage neighbors to commit to their community
- Spread the word how garbage and run-off chemicals affect
marine environments
- Recruit and train volunteers
- Support and engage in research on coastal pollution
- Clean up Freeport's and its neighboring bays, canals,
marshes and beaches
TOGETHER...Few experiences compare with the satisfaction,
accomplishment and sense of pride derived from doing
something special, something worthwhile, something with
and for others. Operation SPLASH is recognized and
applauded by many, including our federal, state, and local
governments. Whether volunteer, benefactor, supporter or
friend, we share in this together. We move forward knowing
that - together- we make our world a better place.
